World Arabic Language Day: Yaba Tech Deputy Registrar Urges Nigerians To See Arabic As First Class Language


Nigerians especially Muslims have been urged to see Arabic Language as a first class language of communication in their daily lives. 

The Deputy Registrar of Yaba College of Technology and Mudir Centre for Islamic Reawakening Lagos, Sheikh Saheed Salman, gave this charge while giving welcome speech purely in Arabic language as the event Chief Host at World Arabic Language Day (WALD) commemoration organized by a Lagos-based Arabic and Islamic Institute, "Ma’hdu Diraasaatul Qur’an Wal – Lugha", on Sunday 15th December, 2024.

The event which held at Mosadi Oluwa Islamic Center, Oworonshoki Lagos had in attendance the of Lovers of Arabic Language.


Sheikh Saheed stated many importance of speaking Arabic Language in day to day activities especially, for Muslims whose spiritual books (Qur'an and Prophetic Hadeeth) were revealed by Allah.

WORLD ARABIC LANGUAGE DAY EVENT

According to him, "Muslims are encouraged to see Arabic language as first class language in their daily lives".

In his opening speech, the Event Host, Dr Ridwan Ibrahim, Mudir Ma’hdu Diraasaatul Qur’an Wal – Lugha, Oworonshoki Lagos expressed joy with people's turn out saying, it was imperative to place much importance on Arabic language as a language of interactions as that would make many people to understand the language very well.

According to Dr Ridwan, "It is important to note that United Nations had scheduled every December 18th as the World Arabic Language Day (WALD).

"So, it is on this I want to charge all parents here seated to encourage their wards to speak Arabic language at home as they always encourage them to speak English language", he said. 

Meanwhile, the event guest Lecturer, Ustadh Nasir Alabi, Head Teacher, Center for Islamic Reawakening, Bariga Lagos delivering the Lecture titled “Arabic: A Universal Language” highlighted many ways in which Arabic language is useful as a language of communication given the fact that many Mathematical and Technological formulas were coined from Arabic words.

Ustadh Nasir said, "the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) established the WALD in 2010 with the aim of celebrating multi-lingualism and cultural diversity, as well as promoting equal use of all UNs’ six official working languages. The UN General Assembly approved Arabic as an official UN language on December 18, 1973.

"This is to the extent of the known virtues of Arabic language," he said.

Also, Ustadh Saheed Junaid, Coordinator, Ma’hdul Qur'an Adult Madrasah, Lagos, who also spoke at the occasion espoused that “by celebrating the Arabic language day, we are also acknowledging the tremendous contributions of its writers, scientists and artists to universal culture.”

These intellectual minds, Junaid added, were the Arabic language authors who enabled the transmission of Greek knowledge to the Latin of medieval Europe, weaving indestructible ties between cultures through time to what we have today".


Another Lagos-based Scholar, Ustadh AbdurRafiih Ridwan, Mudir, Al-Fajir Tutelage, Lagos, advised students of knowledge to keep speaking and listening to Arabic language in order to train their tongues and minds with the language.

Recall that since 2012 when UNESCO had continued to annually mark the World Arabic Language Day (WALD) on every December 18th while the theme for the year 2024 World Arabic Language Day (WALD) is "Arabic Language and AI – Advancing Innovation While Preserving Cultural Heritage".


Highlight of the event was presentation of Awards and Prizes to students who performed excellently in their Arabic studies to World Arabic Language Day.
